Spice Up Your Thanksgiving Dinner This Year

For many of us, Thanksgiving is a time to be spent with family, friends, and loved ones.   Whether you’re looking forward to the food, a little time off, or just being reunited with the ones you care about, there’s a lot to get excited about at this time of the year.

Even though we all have our favorite food item to look forward to eating on Thanksgiving, the menu can become a bit repetitive.  While this definitely isn’t a bad thing, why not try a great new recipe that will take everyone by surprise?

Whether it’s a new stuffing recipe or a brand new dessert, everyone will be raving about the pleasant surprise you brought to dinner.  Even something simple like a brand new casserole can start a new Thanksgiving tradition for you and your loved ones.

So pull out notepad, put your thinking cap on, and start a brand new custom that will have everyone talking.  Be creative.  The internet is a great place to find recipes that you would have never dreamed existed!

Here are just a few suggestions that sound dangerously tasty and can be found in many places on the web:

Pumpkin cheesecake

Turkey casserole

Apple stuffing

Butternut squash fries

Liven Up Your Home… Without Emptying Your Wallet

Lacking love for your living room? Bored by your bedroom? We often need a refresh in our homes but feel overwhelmed at the cost of buying all new furniture.

Getting a new feel to your home doesn’t always require big bucks. Here are some cost friendly tips for livening up your rooms.

 De-Clutter

The first step should be to de-clutter the space. Maybe some papers piled on the table or the kids’ toys are covering the floor. Put things in their proper home. Consider all pieces and decide which ones you could stand to lose. Donate some of it to charity or put them on craigslist. Once all the clutter is straightened out, you may identify a few quick fixes to make you love your home again.

Furniture

Sometimes a room can take on new life just because of rearranging furniture. Try putting your bed against a different wall. Add a wall mirror to give the feel of more space. Work with angles of the room and consider unconventional ways to lay out large pieces. You can also look at recovering couches and chairs in new fabric if you want a bigger change in your space.

Paint

Maybe all your room needs is a painting update. Are your colors outdated? Is the paint looking dull? It may be time to brighten up the kitchen or choose some neutral tones for your living room. Make sure to take time to sample paint colors and choose one you know will accent your other décor, and give you the feeling you are looking for.

Throw pillows, Rugs, Window Coverings

Often all you need to brighten up a room is a few colorful throw pillows, new curtains or an area rug. Again make sure to choose items that work well with your furniture and favorite pieces but don’t be scared to try new, bold colors.

Plants

Any room can benefit from the health and beauty aspects of plants. As long as no one is allergic – check out your local nursery for what works best in rooms with more and less light.

Lighting and Artwork

Lighting in a room can make a world of difference. You may want to look at low lighting for your bedroom or den, but want strong, bright lights in your kitchen and bathroom where attention to details is important. Check out your local lighting or hardware store for many lighting options – from pot lights to chandeliers and a variety of floor and table lamps.

Art is subjective. What you prefer on your walls may not be to everyone’s taste but you should ensure that you are happy with what is reflecting your tastes. You may want to consider blowing up favorite pictures and putting them in inexpensive frames. Your children’s artwork could be showcased in this manner as well. You may even want to just move pictures from one room to another to change things up.

Thrift Shops and Swap Meets

If you really want to keep within a small budget – but want to consider new furniture, lamps, pillows, artwork and more – check out thrift stores and swap meets. After all, one persons trash is another persons treasure!

Shine This Year with Holiday Lighting!

As fall carries on, the nights become longer and the days become shorter.  The holiday season is under way and gift wrap is coming out and decorations are going up.  Why not light up your street this holiday season with some great lighting and décor.  Here are a few tips when deciding what to put out in your yard and on your house this year.

Use Timers on Lights

Make sure you never fall asleep and accidentally leave all those bright lights on all night by setting a timer so that they come on and off at exactly the right time each day and night. This can help save you lots of unnecessary time and money!

Go Big

What’s the point of going through all the trouble of putting up outdoor holiday décor if it’s hardly noticeable? Let yours be one of the houses that people have to slow down to look at because it’s so beautiful!

Venture Down and Out

It’s common for people to put holiday lighting on their roofs and stop there.  As seen on the picture on this blog, adding the lights to your yard, shrubs, and trees can add so much beauty to the overall look.

Make it Your Own

Why stop at traditional lighting? Maybe your favorite thing about this time of year is the greenery or the snowmen.  Add extra touches to personalize your home décor and make it different from the other houses on the street.

Have fun, relax, and start thinking about what you want to do about outdoor holiday décor this year.  To really make it easy on yourself, try calling an electrician, like your local Mr. Electric, for help.  Professionals can make your house shine without all of the strenuous work!

Get your home holiday ready with Dempsey Electric!

Here at Dempsey Electric We know the holidays can be a stressful time of year. With that said, the last thing you need is a holiday electrical disaster. Holiday decorations are meant to be festive and fun, but without the proper safety practices these seemingly innocent decorations can pull the plug on any holiday celebration. So Before you trim the tree or deck the halls avoid some common electrical mishaps by following these safety precautions…

1. Don’t overload your electrical outlets!

Plugging too many lights into a single socket can overload the circuit and can lead to a house fire. To avoid overloading don’t link more than three strands of lights together unless the directions say it is safe to do so. Amperage on Christmas light can add up quickly so be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions when installing multiple lighting sets. Also note that the outlet you plan on using might already be overloaded. To avoid a nuisance caused by tripping breakers Dempsey recommends dedicated outlets and circuits for all Christmas lights.

2. All outdoor lighting and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI).

GFCIs should be installed anywhere where electricity can potentially come in contact with water. A GFCI prevents electrical shock by shutting down the electricity flow at the moment any bit of moisture is detected. To prevent electrical shock and possibly even death a GFCI is crucial when it comes to outdoor lighting. Even if your home already has a GFCI make sure you replace it every four to five years.

3. Inspect all holiday lights, decorations and extension cords before indoor or outdoor use.

Be sure to inspect all decorations, even brand new ones. Upon inspection, if you notice any frayed, bare or loose wires, broken sockets or any exposed loose connections replace it immediately.  Failure to replace unsafe electrical devices can cause bodily harm via a serious shock or even start a house fire. Remember, when in doubt-throw it out!

4. Outdoor lights should be kept outdoors!

All outdoor lights and extension cords should be approved for outdoor use. Outdoor lights not plugged into outdoor approved extension cords can cause a fire.

If you need any electrical work done before the holidays or want to make sure your house is holiday ready please call Dempsey Electrics

Holiday Wire Safety

It’s that time of the year again!  Since Thanksgiving has just passed you’re probably thinking about getting out those holiday lights and decorations.  But while decorating can be fun, it is important to make sure that all of the cords being used are safe and effective for lighting up your home.  Here are a few things to check for this year before and after you start to decorate your home for the holidays.

  •  Check carefully to make sure there are no staple or nail holes from previous years in any of your cords
  •  Make sure that there are no frayed wires being used for your decorations
  •  Keep extension cords out of high traffic areas once plugged in to keep people from tripping
  • To save money and time, set a timer on your lights once they are all set up
  • Give cords their room; make sure that they are not stuck inside door or window cracks
  • If you’ve been using the same lights/extension cord for a while now and it looks like it’s about time to replace them, go ahead.  Great deals can be found on lights right after Christmas each year.
  •  Make sure that each plug is completely plugged into the receptacle body

So have fun this year and let your house light up the street.  Just be careful and follow these guidelines to help ensure a safe and fun holiday season for the whole family!

Are your home electronics safe?

December 20, 2012 by dempseyelectric

Hope these guys called Dempsey Electric before they plugged in!

This holiday season before you plug in that Griswold holiday light display or that picture perfect Christmas tree make sure your home is protected–surge protected!!  Increased electricity use during the holidays can cause extreme electrical fluctuations within your home. These fluctuations can lead to power surges and if your home isn’t adequately protected this can be downright annoying, not to mention costly. Today, most electrical devices are equipped with microprocessors, which unfortunately make electronics extremely sensitive to power surges. Just a little surge can cause substantial damage or even ruin your favorite household devices such as your refrigerator, computer, or home theater system.

When it comes to adequate surge protectors, a simple plug-in protector just isn’t going to cut it. Unfortunately, a lot of these so-called “surge protectors” are nothing more than glorified extension cords. To make sure your home is guarded against power surges, the expert electricians at Dempsey Electric suggest both whole house suppressors and plug-ins for added protection. Whole house suppressors are used to tame electricity spikes by diverting the extra energy into grounding wire instead of into your home. If your home doesn’t have a whole house protector, you aren’t sure, or your existing one needs to be replaced call Dempsey Electric today. Because surge protector installation deals with electricity and needs to be grounded it is best to leave this job up to a professional Houston electrician.

Before you plug in those new holiday toys be sure your surge protectors are up to par by calling Dempsey Electric. A simple installation by one of our expert electricians is all it takes and can save you thousands! Call 713-691-6456 before its too late.

Bost Electric on Christmas Eve

Merry Christmas to all! I went to a rental house this morning in which a circuit in the kitchen was not working. I checked the breakers and all were working properly. The problem I found was that one of the receptacles had a loose connection. When the receptacle was first installed by someone else, they had used the push in connections in the back. These have a tendency to fail over time. I installed a new receptacle and wrapped the wires on the screws on the sides. This method will last a long time and my customer was very happy! If you need an electrical repair at your home or business call me at 336-227-1616.

Summer Reflections: Area First Year Shocked That No One Has Heard of Him Yet

PLANO, TX  -  Southwestern Company first year dealer Christian Barnett is still reeling after his second zero day of Week 1 in the big-brick suburbs of the East Plano school district.  “I know that I’m new at this and that it will take time to get comfortable with my approach, but what I really don’t get is that not a single mom I talked to today had heard of me yet,” complained Christian during the nightly stat call with his student manager, Davis Miller.

Barnett’s roommate, Joe Rebrovick, echoed Barnett’s frustration.  “This is bulls**t.  I was captain of the Pope John Paul II football team in high school.  We crushed our cross-town rivals in the state championship.  That was just on Friday night.  The next Saturday morning I single handedly delivered the most moving performance of Macbeth that my Broadway-seasoned theatre director said she’d ever seen.”  Rebrovick concluded, “…and not a single one of these uppity soccer moms even knew anything about me or these books and CDs I’m selling.”

Barnett continued, “They hadn’t even heard of Southwest either.  My student manager told me about all the important people who have ‘slung the sample case,’ but these moms act like I’m just a door-to-door salesman.”

At press time, student manager Miller was calling upon five years of training in how to deal with emotional rookies by calmly instructing both frustrated dealers to “focus on going for the bag.”
